Venkatappa coins

The Venkatappa and single Kannada/Telugu letter “Ve” (First letter of Venkatappa) are highly prevalent in Madurai, Tanjavur and Gingee Provinces. The coins might have minted for Venkata-II by the nayakas.

These coins were issued at a time when the vijayanagara rein was completely lost during the 16th century.

Following are the varieties of Madurai Nayak – Venkatappa coins.

There is a mint variation on the reverse of the coin. The first one does not have any namam above the legend, whereas the second one has Namam above “Venka”(వెంక).
