The Zelandia Coin of Dutch East India Company

The Netherlands Zeeland Duit 1714 to 1797:

Zeeland (Zeelandia, Zeland, Zelandia, Zealand) is in the southwestern corner of the Netherlands. The lion and waves in a crowned shield is a prominent symbol of Zeeland. You see this symbol on several coins from the Dutch East India Company (with a VOC annotation)

Obverse: ZELAN DIA 1758

Reverse: The lion and waves in a crowned shield

Surrounded by "LUCTOR ET EMERGO" in Latin

Meaning of LUCTOR ET EMERGO:

I struggle and emerge. The motto of the Dutch province of Zeeland to denote its battle against the sea.

The denominations at the time were duit and stuiver, with 8 duit in one stuiver. In general, duit coins were made of copper and stuiver coins were made of silver. There is, however, a silver duit minted from 1725 to 1788 which is quite valuable. A gold half duit was minted with dates 1753 and 1755. Below is a copper duits with ZEELAN DIA (not VOC) printed on the reverse side.
