In November 2013, the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) issued Rs. 5 and Rs. 10 commemorative coins with images of Vaishno Devi on the occasion of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board’s silver jubilee. While in keeping with the Coinage Act, the Delhi High Court questioned the Central Government on the issue of the coin’s secularity following a PIL. The litigation was filed by one Nafis Qazi against the Finance Ministry and RBI and the plea also asked for a provision to be made such that coins with obvious religious motifs not be issued henceforth.
