Coins of the Pallavas

The Pallava dynasty was a medieval South Indian dynasty that existed between the 6th and 9th centuries, ruling a portion of what is today southern India. They gained prominence after the eclipse of the Satavahana or Andhra dynasty, whom the Pallavas served as feudatories.

A most unusual coin with jagged edges and with the brahmi 'lu' written in an earlier style. The outline of the Ujjaiyini symbol can be made out on the Rev.

Fractional units, such as this one, and also where the Elephant faces to the right, are scarce/rare. The coin appears to be unpublished in standard literature (Mitch).
